interviewLooking to venture into the world of media and interviews?  Have a dynamic message you are looking to get noticed? Well the opportunities reside within cultivating the approach.

What does it mean to cultivate?

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, to cultivate is to prepare for use; to foster the growth of; cultivate is the art of improving an existing process; to improve by labor, care, or study; to seek the society of; or make friends with.

So how does this apply to the world of media and interviews?

It relates in the realm of frequency. Speakers, writers, or others of media influence who seem to appear everywhere are those who have mastered the art of offering the most value to their media contacts.
How do you get media professionals to remember you for upcoming projects? You can gain the remembrance of others by positioning yourself as a valuable information source.

Provide information that will benefit others and distribute it in ways that are unique to you or your story and why the audience will be interested in what you have to say. Media interviews are not the time to showcase your accomplishments, your career, or your interests. Your contact with the media should focus on explaining to the audience how the information you have will help or benefit them.

How to plan for future offers?

Find out from your media contact what type of projects, events, or stories they plan to cover in the upcoming segments or shows. See how your message can relate to those upcoming ideas or projects. Listen carefully to what he or she has to say and see if you can find a fit. If so, express what beneficial contribution you can offer to that upcoming segment or project. Be willing to research, offer facts, or even add some personal anecdotes to prove your point.

Promote your creativity by offering to find new story ideas and be willing to do the research. Show yourself as help and willing to go the extra mile and ask the media contact is there anything you can do to make his or her job easier. Being an accessible source of information to others promotes align you as a favorable resource that others want to work with on future projects.

Gear yourself as a helpful resource rather than looking for others to gear themselves for you. This is a good road map for gaining lifelong contacts that turn to you for valuable information and will set your course as expert in your field.
