When you think about link building, chances are that you’re picturing a blog or forum that will link back to another website; generally one that you’re making reference to.  Truth be told, link building isn’t just about your website or your blog either.  Link building involves many different aspects, and it is using those together that truly create a great digital marketing schematic.

Forum Posts

There are an abundance of forums online and chances are there are quite a few hundred that pertain to your particular line of work.  In order to make forum-posting work towards link building, there are a few things you will need to do before you get started.  You will have to have an active account and a complete profile on the forum and make an effort to follow the threads.

The link for your product or service should be found in the signature of your profile, so that it appears with every post you make.  If the information contained within your forum post is informative, relevant and helpful, your chances of generating leads increases with every other member who reads or replies to the posting.

Don’t underestimate the power of the masses to build leads and generate revenues.  This is a great way to do it without having to sell your product or service.  All of these leads are organic and are potentially one of the best ways to draw a crowd.

Many companies feel that forum posts aren’t worth their while, simply because of the amount of time that needs to be devoted to it.  That doesn’t mean however, that you should write it off entirely.  Digital marketing agencies generally include forum posts in their link building packages, as they should.

If you’ve decided to go the route of an agency, beware a company that isn’t willing to provide you with statistics and reports about the efficacy of the postings.  Linking from a forum that has a high traffic level is a fantastic way to get valuable leads, all of which can be monitored.

This has become particularly popular with the foodie blogs, as Pinterest has begun to rise in popularity over the course of the last year.  Blog commenting works in much of the same way as forum posting does, but you’re delving a little bit deeper into your niche.

If you’re a car dealer and you sell used cars but specialize in Ford, then you might want to head on over a blog that is written by a hardcore Mustang owner.  It shouldn’t be hard to find the specialized blogs; they’ll be the ones that are at the top of the search rankings, obviously.  Generally these blogs, whether they are run using Blogger, WordPress or they’re self-hosted, allow the users to register and post while linking their post to their personal website.

Following the same guidelines as the forum posts, make sure that your comments add value to the conversation as opposed to just a quick one liner like “hey, that was great thanks!”.  The more intrigue and discourse you manage to conjure up, the more likely it is that other commenters will be heading on over to your site to find out who you are and what you do.

There are a multitude of other link building strategies including directory submissions, social bookmarking, press release submissions and article writing.  When you pull all of these together they are an incredibly potent combination that is sure to move your website in a more positive direction.
