First let us look at what fictional writing is. In part or whole, fiction is narrative writing that details, suggests, or develops ideas that are not factual. The context of words and images are created by the author. Unlike non-fiction, fiction writers are able to intertwine thoughts, emotions, and imagination to their literary masterpiece. Fiction is not limited to novel writing; fiction can be a part of any composition including theater, cinema, music and more.
Writing all the time
Writing fiction as a profession is when an author writes for purposes other than his or her own amusement or fun. Fiction is a genre of writing, just like any other genre of writing. And the business side of it should be taken seriously, just as you would any other form of business. When writing fiction as a profession or in other words, when writing for consumer markets other than your friends, family, or mom — you want to develop a level of self-induced professionalism. It is unrealistic to think that every writer breaths, dreams, and thinks about writing all the time. That simply would not be true. People that write, have lives too and it is not always spent wanting to write. However, we write and keep it moving. The art of writing fiction takes ingenuity; the art of professionalism takes discipline, and balancing the two takes focus.
Making it work
Okay our secret is out. Writing is not easy and walking the balancing-beam of fun, make believe, and keeping it real – takes even more creative swag. As a professional writer, you quickly learn, it is not all about the passion, the fun, the drive. In fact, more often than not, it is not even about you. The profession of writing does not balance itself around your time-line and nor does it care if you have had your morning coffee or not. Nonetheless, with grammar and punctuation in hand, you pump out the prose and make it work.
Writing anyway
Keeping the flow going is based largely on how you manage your time. For example, making time to write must be treated as an equal on your schedule. If your commitment to write is daily, then set a time on your calendar to do it and do it. Open your word document, open your research tools, and start even you have no idea what you are going to write about or want to write about. Make it your business to at least write something. When you do this, you will find that you actually had something to say, something you were thinking about, and thoughts to verbalize that you did not realize were there. This is the special effect of fiction writing – it does not always have to make sense! Especially since, that what it is all about anyway. Making up ideas and various thought as you go along the way until those fantabulous moments spring along and suddenly it all comes together. Doing what you love and keeping professional has its benefits and its rewards. What is the benefit or reward? Whatever matters most to you that makes the work worthwhile or of benefit to you!
